The Spanish low cost airline has announced ambitious 2023 development plans.

Volotea’s growth strategy at Bordeaux Airport targets a 39% increase in its offerings compared with 2022. Seats available next year will total 712,000, up by 4,300 flights year-on-year.

The airline, which celebrates 10 years of operations at Bordeaux this year, will add two new destinations next year. First, Calvi will be the fourth Corsican destination served from Bordeaux, with weekly flights on Saturdays starting on 6 May 2023. A fourth Greek island destination will be Heraklion on Crete, with flights to/from Bordeaux operating on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 29 April 2023.

The addition of these new routes means that Volotea will serve 23 destinations out of Bordeaux in 2023, seven of them exclusively – Cagliari, Santorini, Corfu, Dubrovnik, Split, Florence and Strasbourg. All this means that, in 2023, the company will provide 80 direct jobs and more than 160 indirect jobs in Bordeaux alone.

“After operating for 10 years in this region, Bordeaux has become one of our strategic development hubs,” remarks Céline Lacroix, Volotea’s international business development manager. “We want to pursue our development plans with all stakeholders to offer people in the Bordeaux region an ever-expanding choice of destinations at competitive prices, while also guaranteeing the best possible passenger experience.”

Overall, Volotea is planning to offer almost 6.5 million seats in France (out of a total of 11.7 million throughout its entire network), during 2023. In terms of capacity, this will actually be an 81% increase on its pre-pandemic offering.

Sustainability is also part of the plan as the airline’s “Voloterra” programme continues to develop. is a series of practical initiatives enshrined in the company’s sustainable development strategy. Since the airline’s creation in 2012, the carrier has implemented more than 50 initiatives to reduce fuel consumption, including a fleet replacement programme which brought in new Airbus A319s and A320s in place of older aircraft. Volotea has also introduced sustainable airline fuel (SAF) in its aircraft and is investing in commercial electric aircraft.
