City of Derry Airport gets London flights boost

The UK government, in partnership with the Department for the Economy in Northern Ireland, is to continue subsidising services between City of Derry Airport and London, although the destination airport will now be Southend Airport rather than Stansted.

The UK government describes the public service obligation (PSO) route as a valuable connection for businesses located in the region, maintaining 26 flights per week. Up to six direct trains an hour from London Southend Airport connect to the City of London in just over 50 minutes.

The move means that passengers can do a full day of business without the need for an overnight stay. It will also boost tourism to the region, provide valuable economic support, and help to secure jobs.

Loganair is the carrier chosen to operate the route and the airline’s managing director, Jonathan Hinkles, commented, “Following a competitive tender process, we are delighted to have been awarded the PSO route between London and the City of Derry, extending Loganair’s long-standing relationship with City of Derry, where we were the first airline operator over 40 years ago.”
