With a catchment area which includes the important petrochemical sector, you could say that Castellón Airport is being fuelled both literally and demographically.
Of course, having a population of two million people, including Castellón province and part of the metropolitan area of Valencia, plus many kilometres of beaches of the Costa Azahar, add to the reasons for travellers to come through the airport. “Castellón province is a dynamic area, with a powerful industry specialising in tile production,” adds the airport’s head of communications, Jordi Ruiz.
These are just some of the key demographic attractions which Castellón Airport has to offer potential customer airlines. “We have a modern facility located in the north of the Region of Valencia, in the centre of Castellón province, just one hour away from the city of Valencia. The airport is strategically placed and has direct links to the major routes running through eastern Spain,” Ruiz notes.
“This airport is a convenient gateway to the Mediterranean. It is close to the main holiday resorts in Castellón province, has a varied geography and offers an excellent array of coastal and inland destinations,” he continues. “The Costa Azahar has more than 120 kilometres of coastline and some of the most beautiful beaches in the region. The inland area is attractive, with historical villages and beautiful landscapes. Castellón also offers some of the major music festivals in Europe.”
Infrastructure developments at the airport are being planned to enhance the offering still further. “Last year, the airport approved a strategic plan to relaunch and diversify its activities,” Ruiz reports. “Following that plan, we have been able to increase passenger traffic and develop activities such as parking, maintenance as well as recycling of aircraft, flight schools, air taxi and a firefighting aircraft base. We are also planning the development of the Complementary Activities Area, which covers 208 hectares. This is a strategic objective to promote use of this land reserve for an economic and logistic hub linked to the airport,” he adds.
So what are the latest successes for Castellón on the route development front? “First, in the Winter season, there will be a new service by Wizz Air from London Luton Airport which begins in December 2019,” Ruiz confirms. “In the 2020 summer season, flights will begin to Vienna by Wizz Air and to Marseille by Volotea,” he adds. Winter or summer then, travellers will find plenty to recharge themselves.
